Cultural Etiquette

Today’s Times offers a guide to cultural sensitivities in the Arab world and Afghanistan. While intended for the military, the tips will no doubt prove useful for boardroom battles as well. For example, in the Arab world men should only shake hands with women if the woman initiates it, while in Afghanistan no physical contact is acceptable between men and women in public. Accepting hospitality in Afghanistan is paramount, so offers of tea and coffee should always be accepted, but in Qatar accepting more than three cups would be deemed impolite. Global Lingo’s interpreters are fully conversant with such cultural etiquette, and will always be happy to advise before meetings, while our localisation service will ensure that any of your translations are culturally appropriate.
