Interpreting Football

News – Interpreting Football
2007.12.19

Today’s Guardian highlights the challenges facing interpreters. Sid Lowe recalls interpreting for Michael Owen at a press conference, when the two Spanish forms of ‘to be’ were confused. The translation of ‘Lampard está buenísimo’ thus took on a different meaning from the one intended. Michael Owen is not the only footballer to have encountered difficulties in translation; one interpreter managed to condense minute-long answers from David Beckham into 10-second sound bites. Sid Lowe concludes that translating in front of a quote-hungry press is always going to be difficult, especially when topics have their own special idiom.
