At the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Intel CEO Paul Otellini has envisioned a world where mobile devices can provide real‑time translation of conversations. While such software does currently exist – albeit only really suitable for translating road signs and menus – he stressed that the development of such devices will depend on more powerful processors using less power and the rollout of wider wireless networks. Even once these obstacles have been overcome, though, it will be an immense challenge for any non‑human translator to relay idiom and linguistic nuance fluently. Nonetheless, Global Lingo looks forward to an exciting future in the nexus between translation and technology.
