Joe Biden discusses Kosovo or gossip?

The Economist today carries a blog on transcription. Following a visit to Serbia by Joe Biden, the Vice President of the United States, the White House issued a transcript of some of his remarks. One passage read, The United States does not – I emphasize, does not – expect Serbia to recognize the independence of Gossip.

Of course, he actually said ‘Kosovo’. However, Kosovo was rendered as ‘Gossip’ throughout the original transcript. The White House took 40 minutes to correct this error. So what happened? Two scenarios are likely. Either the transcript was produced by someone whose first language was not English, or it was produced from a computerised voice-recognition program.

Global Lingo only ever uses fluent, human transcribers who are highly trained and experienced. This is why you will never find such mistakes in transcripts coming from 10 Downing Street.
