News – Beijing Translations
2008.03.20

The Sun today reports that thousands of poor translations are being corrected in Beijing in the run up to this summer’s Olympic Games in the Chinese capital. Shops, restaurants and hotels have been warned that there could be penalties for mistranslations that are not revised. The article goes on to cite several humorous translations, including menus offering ‘steamed crap’, warnings to ‘mind crotch’ and disabled toilets described as ‘deformity man’s passage’. However, the piece concludes with the wry note that ‘their English is probably better than your Mandarin’. If you require any language assistance ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, please do not hesitate to draw on our experience of the language now.
