There’s more to the Italian language than just translation

Written by on

It’s a well known fact that Italians are passionate people. Their language, cities, food, culture and general outlook are flamboyant, rich and varied. The Italian language reflects that, it can be romantic and flowing as well as full of passion and vigour.

Italian translation is just part of the story. Written communication in any language struggles to convey true meaning because it simply can’t show the person’s passion. In Italy the language is nothing without the speakers gestures, much of the meaning is lost.

When I saw this post on Brain Pickings about a book entitled – Speak Italian: The Fine Art of the Gesture, I just had to post about it. It’s one of the most entertaining books on body language I’ve seen. The way the gestures, some very complex, demonstrate thoughts and emotions in conjunction with the language is just magical.
