Finally An Italian Christmas: On the 12th day of Christmas La Befana gave to me…

Written by on

In part five of the Christmas Traditions across the globe we take a look at Italy and their very kind witch, La Befana.

Legend has it that on the 12th night of Christmas, whilst the three wise men were searching for Baby Jesus, they came across an old witch grandmother who was doing her house chores. When they asked the witch to join them in their search she coldly declined their offer but soon realised she had made a grave mistake, so set off on her broom in search of the three wise men and Baby Jesus. Sadly La Befana got lost on her search and so every year from then on, she travelled the skies of Italy searching for Baby Jesus and delivering candies and presents to good children across the country.
